Refrigerator repair in a Lynnwood-area kitchen

Refrigerators & freezers

What goes wrong inside a refrigerator

Think of a refrigerator as two cold rooms sharing one cooling loop. Most breakdowns happen where that cold is produced, pushed around or melted off. Down near the floor on most models, the compressor and condenser fan shed heat into the kitchen. The evaporator, a finned coil hidden behind the freezer’s back wall, does the chilling, and a small fan blows that air through ducts; many designs add a damper that rations how much drifts down to the fresh-food side. Periodically a defrost heater warms the coil so ice cannot smother it, and a defrost thermostat or sensor signals the control board to end the cycle. When one of those pieces quits, the symptoms in the kitchen look much alike: a warm shelf, a frozen head of lettuce or a puddle. Our technicians tell them apart with a meter on the part itself.

Our six towns keep a mixed fleet. Rental apartments and condos in Lynnwood and Everett run mostly compact top-freezer and bottom-freezer units, while houses built since 2000 around Martha Lake, and many in Mill Creek, favor French-door models that dispense ice through the door. Edmonds remodels sometimes tuck a built-in behind matching cabinet panels. Then comes the spare refrigerator in the garage, which labors through a hot spell such as the heat dome of June 2021 and can let its freezer half go soft on a frosty night. Damp marine air adds sweating gaskets and quicker frost behind any tired seal. Refrigerators and upright freezers we service come from Amana, Bosch, Café, Electrolux, Frigidaire, GE, KitchenAid, Kenmore, LG, Maytag, Miele, Thermador and Whirlpool.

Symptoms

Refrigerator symptoms and their usual causes

  • Fresh food warm, freezer cold

Cold is being made but not reaching the lower shelves. Commonly the evaporator has iced solid because a defrost heater or defrost thermostat quit, the evaporator fan motor has seized, or the damper door is jammed closed. We meter each one and look at the frost pattern on the coil before naming a part.

  • Clicking, then silence, nothing cold

A tick from the back every few minutes with no steady hum usually means the compressor’s relay or overload protector is cutting it out each time it tries to start. A seized condenser fan or a dust-matted coil can trip it the same way. Should readings implicate the compressor itself, we spell out the repair-or-replace picture.

  • Water under the crisper drawers

Each defrost sends melt water down a trough to a narrow drain tube. If that tube freezes or plugs with crumbs, the overflow runs into the fresh-food side and collects under the drawers. We thaw and flush the drain, then find out whether a drain heater or a weak defrost let it freeze to begin with.

  • Thick frost on the back wall

A white crust over the freezer’s rear panel, or ice packed around its vents, points to the defrost circuit: heater, defrost thermostat or the control that schedules defrost. A gasket gone flat lets humid kitchen air in and speeds the buildup. We test that circuit, inspect the seal and replace what has failed.

  • Lettuce freezing in the fridge

When the fresh-food side runs too cold, the air damper may be stuck open, a thermistor may be misreporting, or the control board may be driving the fans wrong. Food shoved against the cold-air outlet freezes too. We compare the thermistor’s resistance with the published temperature table and watch the damper cycle.

  • Doors sweating along the seams

Beads of water on the door edges or on the center flip mullion of a French-door model usually come from a gasket that has flattened, a door that sags out of line, or a failed mullion heater. Damp, rainy weeks make it worse. We realign the doors, test the heaters and swap gaskets that have lost their shape.

Before you call

Five checks before you book a refrigerator visit

  • Look at the breaker panel, then plug a lamp into the refrigerator’s outlet to prove the circuit is live.
  • Confirm the temperature controls were not bumped and that no showroom or vacation mode is lit on the display.
  • Shut a sheet of paper in the door and tug it; if it slides out with no drag, that gasket is leaking cold.
  • Move packed food away from the vents on the back walls of the fridge and freezer so air can circulate.
  • Switch off power, then vacuum dust from the lower front grille or the rear condenser coil with a soft brush attachment.

By town

Refrigerators in each of our six towns

In Lynnwood, condos and apartments near City Center often wedge compact units into tight alcoves, where poor airflow wears out condenser fans. Mountlake Terrace’s compact postwar houses, many dating to the 1950s and 1960s, give a refrigerator little breathing room, so coils clog and run hot. Shoreline ramblers keep old garage freezers going for decades. Edmonds remodels in the Bowl and on the view slopes bring built-in and panel-ready models. Mill Creek houses near Thomas Lake and along 164th Street SE lean toward large French-door units. Everett, from Silver Lake to the south-end apartments off Evergreen Way, mixes rental top-freezers with garage refrigerators that baked in the 2021 heat.

Repair or replace

Fix the refrigerator, or let it go?

The bulk of refrigerator repairs come down to a fan motor, a defrost component, a water valve, a gasket, a thermistor or a control board, and each is worth replacing in a cabinet with a sound liner. The tougher conversation starts when readings lead to the sealed system: a compressor that will not run even with a good relay, or refrigerant escaping from a coil. We do that work right in the kitchen, yet it costs enough that age, efficiency and what a replacement would run all start to weigh in, and we set those out calmly and leave the choice to you. Still under warranty? Being LG and Whirlpool authorized, we take covered repairs on their refrigerators, KitchenAid, Maytag, JennAir and Amana included; with other makers, their coverage comes first. Should you decline the repair, the visit stops at the diagnostic fee.

Questions

Refrigerator repair questions

My fridge is warm in Lynnwood. How soon can someone come?

Ring us as early as you can, Monday through Sunday. A fridge that keeps losing cold moves ahead of less pressing calls, so a same-day visit is frequently on the table if you reach us before the schedule fills. Prefer the online form? Expect a call back from us to agree on a two-hour span for the technician’s arrival. Keep the doors closed meanwhile to hold what cold is left.

The compressor seems to be failing. Now what?

Then the conversation turns to trade-offs you can weigh. A compressor or refrigerant fault belongs to the sealed system, and putting that right costs well beyond a fan or a defrost part. On an aging refrigerator that usually points toward replacing it; on a recent one, particularly with a maker’s warranty still running, repair may still pay. Our job is to show what the meter found so the decision is yours.

Our Everett garage fridge lets the freezer go soft each winter. Why?

Plenty of top-freezer designs rely on one thermostat, mounted down in the fresh-food compartment. A chilly garage keeps that compartment cold without help, the thermostat seldom asks for cooling, and the freezer above drifts warm. Certain models take a small add-on heater designed for this situation. Summer reverses it: the unit runs without pause, which wears out the condenser fan and the start relay.

Power came back after the windstorm, but the display stays dark. What failed?

Restored power can arrive with a spike. After the November 2024 bomb cyclone, which left over 70,000 customers in Snohomish County in the dark, control and display boards were exactly the kind of part at risk. Start with the breaker and a different outlet. If those are fine, the technician measures supply voltage, the board’s input and the door switches before saying which part died.

Can you service a built-in fridge hidden behind cabinet panels in Edmonds or Mill Creek?

We can. Thermador, Miele, KitchenAid, Café, Bosch and GE built-ins appear in remodeled Edmonds kitchens and in newer Mill Creek homes. Their condensers usually sit up top behind a grille, which is where the technician begins when cooling fades. Cabinet panels need gentle handling, so drop cloths and edge guards go down before anything is moved.

How do I know if my refrigerator should go back to the maker instead?

Look for the purchase date and the serial plate inside the fresh-food section, and share both when you phone or send the request page. If coverage is still running on an LG or a Whirlpool-family refrigerator, our authorized service handles the covered repair; with other makers, we will point you there before you spend a cent with anyone, ourselves included. After it lapses, our visit follows its normal course: readings first, a single written price, then your yes or no.

Start with a diagnostic visit

Approve the refrigerator repair and the written price already holds our diagnostic charge; decline, and the invoice holds just the diagnosis. Got a washer or range acting up too? Book it for the same trip, and that machine is diagnosed and priced on a sheet of its own.
