Kenmore

Kenmore in Shoreline and Edmonds homes

Kenmore was a store brand for most of its history, and the machines carrying the name were built under contract by other manufacturers. That history shows in the post-war ramblers of Shoreline, where about 35 percent of homes predate 1960, and in the hillside houses of Edmonds and Esperance: many of their laundry rooms and kitchens still hold a Kenmore washer, dryer, chest freezer or range bought long ago and kept running. Newer Kenmore models turn up in estate-sale houses and rentals around Richmond Highlands, Meridian Park and Five Corners. Because the badge doesn’t say who made the machine, every Kenmore job starts with one question: whose engineering is inside this cabinet?

The answer is printed on the model tag. Kenmore model numbers begin with a three-digit prefix and a dot, and that prefix identifies the manufacturer: 110 marks Whirlpool-built laundry, 665 a Whirlpool-built dishwasher, 253 a refrigerator or freezer from Frigidaire, and 795 a refrigerator made by LG. Once we know the maker, the failure patterns follow that maker’s design. A Whirlpool-built Kenmore top-loader wears lid locks and shift actuators, an LG-built front-loader needs its drain pump filter cleared, and a Frigidaire-built range wears out infinite switches. Parts are ordered by the original maker’s numbers, so most Kenmore repairs are no harder than fixing the brand that actually built them.

Codes and tests

Kenmore codes speak the builder’s language

A Kenmore display uses its maker’s vocabulary. A Whirlpool-built washer reports F-and-E pairs, an LG-built front-loader shows short letter codes for drain, fill, balance and door, and a Frigidaire-built range may post an F-number when a sensor or key fails. Some older Kenmores have no display and signal only by blinking a light or refusing to start. Before reading any code, we check the model prefix so it is interpreted against the right manual, then use the builder’s service mode and a meter to confirm the part. Read us the full model number when you call, and the right parts ride along.

Kenmore in older Shoreline and Edmonds houses

Many of the Kenmore machines we meet live in older houses, and older houses bring their own issues. In Shoreline ramblers and Edmonds hillside homes, we often test the outlet, breaker and dryer receptacle before opening the appliance, because a loose supply connection can mimic a dead control; when the trouble lies in the house wiring rather than the machine, we tell you plainly that it is a job for an electrician. Gas heats about 44 percent of Shoreline homes and roughly half of those in Edmonds, so gas Kenmore dryers and ranges are common. Both cities have soft water, which spares valves from scale but punishes heavy detergent doses.

Warranty first

Kenmore coverage and extended plans

Kenmore coverage depends on when and where the machine was bought, and some owners added an extended plan at the time of sale, so check your records before booking. If any of that coverage is still active, start there. Our technicians work for a local, independent company, not for Kenmore. When the coverage has run out, we repair the appliance under one written price and our own written warranty.

Interurban Appliance Pro is a local, independent repair company, separate from Kenmore; that name only identifies the machines we repair.

Questions

Kenmore repair questions

How do I find out who made my Kenmore?

Look for the model tag, usually inside the door, on the door frame, along the lid or behind the kick plate. The model number begins with three digits and a dot, and that prefix names the builder. You can read the whole number to us by phone or enter it in the request form, and we will tell you which manufacturer’s parts and test procedures apply.

My Kenmore top-load washer won’t spin. Is it the same repair as a Whirlpool?

If the model number starts with 110, yes: Whirlpool built it, and it shares their parts. On those washers the usual causes are a failed lid lock, a shift actuator, a worn coupler on older direct-drive models or a jammed drain pump. We run the Whirlpool service test, find the step that stalls and quote one price for the fix.

Are parts still available for an older Kenmore?

For most models, yes. Because large manufacturers built Kenmore machines, replacement parts are listed under the original maker’s part numbers and stay easy to find for many years. Very old controls or discontinued trim pieces can be harder to source. When a part needs ordering, the technician notes it on the written price and comes back to fit it, with no extra trip charge for that return.

Do you service Kenmore appliances in Esperance and Woodway?

Yes. Esperance and Woodway sit right beside Edmonds, and we cover both, along with Shoreline neighborhoods such as Richmond Beach and Ballinger. A good share of Esperance houses went up in the 1950s with gas heat, so older Kenmore gas dryers and ranges are a familiar sight there. If you ever notice a gas odor, get everyone outdoors first, and from the lawn ring 911 or your gas utility.

Can you check my Kenmore dryer and refrigerator on one visit?

Yes. Mention the second machine when you send the form, or bring it up during the callback; the technician will then look at both. The two repairs are written up and priced apart, and the yes or no on each is yours.
