Why Shoreline dryers run long
Shoreline’s ramblers went up fast in the 1950s, and the laundry often landed wherever space allowed: a garage wall, a back porch, a hall closet near the kitchen. When later owners moved the dryer, the vent usually followed by the longest available route, through the crawlspace or along the garage ceiling to a hood clear across the house. Each extra elbow and every crushed section of foil duct slows the air. A dryer that can’t move air can’t carry moisture out, so loads take two cycles, the cabinet overheats, and before long the thermal fuse, or else the high-limit thermostat, opens. That is why our technicians measure airflow at the outside vent hood before suspecting the heating element or the gas valve.
Weather makes a long vent worse. The rain band forecasters call the Puget Sound Convergence Zone has a habit of forming right over the King–Snohomish line, so Shoreline gets more rain than its neighbors and now and then a surprise snow, including a spring storm on April 18, 2008. When warm, wet exhaust passes through a cold crawlspace, it condenses inside the duct, and lint turns to paste where the water pools. On the west side, homes in Richmond Beach and Innis Arden sit on slopes above the Sound, where vents exit into wind and damp air off the water, and a stuck flapper hood is a common find. In Highland Terrace, near Shoreview Park, the issue is age: original dryer circuits and gas connections that deserve a look whenever a dryer is repaired.
Symptoms
Dryer problems we fix in Shoreline
Runs but stays cold
Electric models usually have an open element, a blown thermal fuse or a high-limit that tripped for good; gas models, a weak igniter, a dead flame sensor or tired valve coils. Each gets a continuity check on the meter, and the vent gets measured too, because choked airflow often caused the failure.
Takes two cycles to dry
Usually a long, crushed or lint-packed vent, a clogged lint screen housing, or a moisture sensor coated with fabric softener film. We measure airflow at the hood, clean the sensor bars, and test the cycling thermostat that controls the heat.
Thumping, squealing or grinding
Worn drum rollers, a frayed belt, a dry idler pulley or failing drum glides. The technician opens the cabinet, spins each roller by hand, checks the belt and pulley, and replaces only the worn pieces while the drum is out.
Dead when you press start
Sometimes the outlet has no power; otherwise the culprit is a door switch, the thermal fuse, the start switch or the drive motor. Outlet and breaker get tested before anything inside the cabinet, and when household wiring proves to be the fault, we say plainly that an electrician should take it from there.
Gas dryer glows but won’t light
The igniter glows, yet the gas valve coils never open, or the igniter has grown too weak to reach ignition temperature. We test coils and flame sensor. Any smell of gas means stopping right there: everyone out, and the gas utility or 911 gets called from the street.
Before you call
Safe checks before you book
- Clean the lint screen, then shine a flashlight into its slot to look for packed lint below.
- Step outside while the dryer runs and feel for a strong push of air at the vent hood flap.
- Make sure the dryer’s breaker hasn’t tripped and the plug or cord is seated firmly in the outlet.
- Pull the dryer forward a little and straighten any foil duct that has flattened against the wall.
Richmond Beach · electric dryer, two-cycle loads
In a Richmond Beach house above the water, an electric dryer needed two full cycles for towels for weeks, and finally stopped heating at all. The technician found an open thermal fuse, then traced the vent through the crawlspace to a sag full of wet lint near the outside wall. The written price covered the fuse and clearing that run, and the owner approved it. A new fuse came from the van, and a strong push of air at the hood confirmed the fix before the test load.

Shoreline houses and dryer airflow
With about 35% of its homes built before 1960 and another 31% from 1960 to 1979, Shoreline has a lot of dryers pushing air through vent paths laid out decades ago. Gas heats roughly 44% of homes here, so gas dryers turn up often, and both kinds share the same weak point: air that can’t get out. For dryer repair in Shoreline, our technicians follow the whole run, from the lint screen housing to the exterior hood, and point out when the duct itself needs work beyond the dryer. Is the washer beside it misbehaving as well? Mention it on your call or in your form, and the technician handles both in one stop, with a separate written price for each. Many dryer parts ride in the van, so repairs often finish that day.
Brands
Dryer brands common in Shoreline
Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore dryers built on long-running electric and gas platforms fill many Shoreline laundry rooms, and their rollers, belts and thermal fuses are parts we carry. Front-load pairs from LG and Samsung are common after remodels, with heat-pump and condensing models from Bosch, Miele and LG showing up in condo closets that have no outside vent. Speed Queen and Electrolux dryers appear too. Tell us whether yours burns gas or runs on electricity when you book; the model number is usually printed inside the door frame.
Questions
Dryer questions from Shoreline
Clothes come out damp in Shoreline even after long cycles. Why?
Most of the time it is airflow. A long or crushed vent, a stuck hood flap or lint packed under the screen keeps moist air inside the drum. A moisture sensor coated with softener film can also end cycles early or run them long. The technician measures airflow at the hood, cleans and tests the sensor, and checks the heat source with a meter.
Gas dryers in Shoreline houses: are they part of your work?
Yes. Plenty of Shoreline homes have gas service, so gas dryers come up often. Our technicians test igniters, sensors and gas-valve coils, and look over the flex connector and shutoff for obvious trouble. Should you notice the smell of gas, skip the dryer entirely: walk everyone outside, and wait until you are clear of the house to call the gas company or 911.
Should an aging dryer be repaired or retired?
Most dryer failures are simple parts: fuses, thermostats, belts, rollers, igniters and elements. On a cabinet with no rust through the drum, a repair usually makes sense. When the motor and control board fail together, or the drum itself is damaged, the technician says so and writes one price so you can weigh it against a replacement.
If I okay the dryer repair, what happens to its diagnostic fee?
It stops being its own line. What you paid for the diagnosis is counted within the written price for the repair, so the visit and the fix arrive as one number. Skip the repair and the fee settles the visit, and you keep what the technician learned, including the state of your vent run.
No outside vent on my Shoreline condo dryer. Is it still fixable?
Usually. Condensing and heat-pump dryers trap moisture in a condenser or a collection tank instead of venting outdoors. When those clog with lint or the pump fails, drying slows and codes appear. The technician cleans and inspects the condenser, tests the pump and sensors, and checks the drain line if the unit empties into a standpipe.
