Shoreline ice makers and storm outages
The windstorm of November 19–20, 2024 knocked out power across the region; at its peak about 43,000 customers of the Seattle-area city utility were in the dark. When the electricity returned, plenty of refrigerators restarted cleanly. Others came back with an ice maker that never cycled again. An outage can leave the ice maker’s module parked mid-harvest, its fill tube frozen solid from water that dripped in as the freezer warmed and then refroze, or a control board confused by repeated flickers. None of that is obvious from the front of the door. Our technicians check the module, the fill tube, the water inlet valve and the board’s output in order, measuring rather than guessing, and they explain each finding as they go so you know why a part is or isn’t needed.
Water quality works in your favor here. Shoreline draws on Seattle’s soft supply: in North City, east of I-5, a local water supplier delivers it, while in Meridian Park, west of the freeway, it comes straight from the Seattle system. Either way, the inlet valve and its fine screen rarely clog with scale, so a slow fill usually traces to a spent filter, a pinched supply line or low pressure in the house. Hollow, small or cloudy cubes point the same way. What soft water can’t prevent is freezing: a fill tube iced over after a door was left ajar. Along N 185th Street, from the light-rail station west toward Aurora, we also meet ice makers that sat idle while a household traveled, their modules sticking on the first cycle back.
Symptoms
Ice maker faults in Shoreline
No ice after an outage
The module stopped mid-cycle or the fill tube froze while the power was off. The technician checks for ice in the tube and mold, cycles the module in test mode, and puts the meter on the ice maker harness and the inlet valve terminals.
Small, hollow or cloudy cubes
The mold never fills because water arrives too slowly: an old filter, a pinched supply line, or an inlet valve losing strength. We check household pressure, inspect line and filter, and read the valve coil’s resistance on the meter.
Auger grinds, nothing drops
Cubes thawed and refroze as one block in the bin, or the auger motor or its gear is wearing out. We break the clump apart, check the auger motor and dispenser switch with a meter, and work out why the bin warmed in the first place.
Water leaking from the door
A cracked fill tube, a leaking inlet valve, or a frozen dispenser line on through-the-door models. The technician traces the water path, tests the valve for seepage, and checks the door heater that keeps the chute clear.
Slow ice and a soft freezer
The ice maker is fine, but the freezer can’t hold temperature, often from a defrost or fan failure. We measure freezer and evaporator temperatures and test the defrost circuit, since ice only forms when the cold side works.
Before you call
Four checks before booking
- Confirm the shutoff arm is down, or the ice switch turned on, and the bin pushed fully home.
- Replace the water filter if it is past its date; a spent filter slows every fill.
- Pull the refrigerator out gently and look for a kinked or flattened supply line behind it.
- After an outage, give the freezer a full day to get cold before judging the ice maker.
North City · no ice since the storm
A North City household noticed the ice bin stayed empty for days after power returned from a winter storm. The technician found the fill tube packed with ice and the module parked halfway through its cycle. After thawing the tube with a steamer and testing the inlet valve with a meter, the technician cycled the module, and it stalled again. The written price for a new module was approved, the part came from the van, and the first batch of cubes dropped before the visit ended.

Why outages hit Shoreline ice makers
Shoreline’s windstorms rarely end with one clean outage. Power tends to blink, return and drop again, and each restart can catch an ice maker mid-harvest or send a jolt into the control board. Housing adds a second factor. With about 63% of homes detached and so many built before 1960, refrigerator supply lines often run from under the kitchen sink through the crawlspace, and a line routed through cold, damp space is one more place for a freeze or a slow drip. Remodeled kitchens add through-the-door dispensers with heaters, sensors and switches of their own. For ice maker repair in Shoreline, give the freezer time to reach temperature after any outage; if the ice maker still sits idle, call us Monday through Sunday or send the form.
Brands
Ice maker brands in Shoreline refrigerators
Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag and Amana refrigerators share several ice maker designs, and we carry common modules and inlet valves for them. GE and Café units use their own modules, and many LG French-door models produce ice in a compartment built into the fresh-food door, where a warm seal or a failed fan stops production. Frigidaire, Electrolux and Kenmore models round out what we see in Shoreline, while Bosch, Thermador and Miele built-ins have layouts of their own. Give us the model number beforehand so the technician can arrive with the right part.
Questions
Ice maker questions from Shoreline
The power came back but the ice didn’t. What happened in my Shoreline freezer?
When power drops mid-cycle, the module can stall partway through a harvest, and water that dripped into the fill tube as the freezer warmed can freeze it shut once the cold returns. Repeated flickers can also confuse the control board. Give the freezer a full day to recover; if the ice maker stays idle, the technician tests the module, tube and valve.
Can you fix the standalone ice machine in my Shoreline kitchen?
No; that equipment is not something we work on. Our technicians handle ice makers built into refrigerators, including through-the-door dispensers and the ice compartments on French-door models, anywhere in Shoreline. Undercounter and countertop ice machines and anything commercial fall outside our service, so a refrigerator with an idle ice maker is where we can help.
Does Shoreline’s soft water affect my ice?
Very little, and mostly in a good way. Seattle’s soft supply rarely leaves scale in the inlet valve or the mold. Off tastes or cloudy cubes usually come from an old filter or a supply line that needs flushing. Slow production points to low flow or a freezer that runs warm, both of which the technician can test.
Going ahead with the ice maker repair: is the diagnosis extra?
No. The diagnosis fee sits within the written price you agree to, so the invoice shows a single figure covering the visit and the work together. Should the repair not go ahead, you settle only that fee for the visit, nothing further, and you still know exactly which part failed and what putting it right would take.
Is an ice maker worth fixing on an older Shoreline refrigerator?
Usually, if the refrigerator itself is healthy. Modules, inlet valves and fill tubes are ordinary repairs. If the technician finds the real problem is a freezer that can’t hold temperature, with readings that implicate the sealed system, you hear the case for repairing the refrigerator and the case for replacing it before you spend anything.
